A number of recent Old English textbooks have proposed to get the student as fast as possible into the reading of the literature. This is our aim as well, but we do not believe the literature can be accurately translated or sensitively read without a basic grasp of Old English grammar, the origins of the language, and its position in relation to Modern English. These things cannot be taken for granted. To read acceptably and listen critically one must gain a reasonable understanding of the sounds of Old English and how they are arrived at.
